Phonics Mapping & Support Documents

Phonics: boy reading

A full list of all validated SSP programmes can be viewed here. Whilst there is no statutory requirement for schools to choose one of the SSP programmes on the validated list and Ofsted does not have a preferred programme or approach it’s important that “schools take an approach that is rigorous, systematic, used with fidelity (any resources used should exactly match the Grapheme Phoneme Correspondence (GPC) progression of their chosen SSP approach), and achieves strong results for all pupils, including the most disadvantaged.” (DfE: Choosing a phonics teaching programme, updated Jan 23.)

We've collated mapping & supporting documents from a range of publishers of phonics resources to help you easily compare what is available and potentially help to identify which books in your existing provision will fit into a commercially available Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) teaching programme or your school’s own SSP. If you are auditing your resources, you may need to top up with additional books to ensure your provision meets national curriculum and Ofsted requirements for teaching reading using systematic synthetic phonics. These documents should help with this.

    • Guidance on selecting fully decodable books
    • The Little Wandle SEND Programme has been developed to be used with the graduated approach to teach children to learn to read in small steps that provide the right amount of challenge. It is anticipated that most children and young people who follow it will be in specialist provision of some kind. The SEND Programme isn’t additional practice for those children who are falling slightly behind their peers. It provides pathways for pupils who may need very specific adaptations to the teaching steps because they have complex needs, and has been developed with the advice from Special schools across the country. See samples of Phase 2, Phase 3, Phase 4 and Phase 5 SEND Programme weekly grids.
